Chamonix-Mont Blanc

Bonjour!

As I write this, the colors of the sky in the background of the massifs are changing ever so slowly.  It’s almost 10 pm here and the sun has just set.  There is a manageable chill in the mountain air – a reprieve from the stifling heat that has surrounded western Europe last week.  We are sitting in the balcony of our room in the mountains facing the highest peak in all of Europe.

Yes, THAT peak.

Mont Blanc.

The street below is still busy with mountain enthusiasts of all kinds – mountain bikers, hikers, rock climbers, active old people – all retiring for the day after a rich day of adventures, with face and shoulders burnt from an amazing day under the sun.

I never imagined that I would one day make it here.  But my passion for the mountains, still young really, has made it inevitable that I would one day sit where I am sitting right now, in complete awe of the privilege to be surrounded by the powerful beauty that is nature.

Join the journey.  Of snowcapped white mountains in the summer.  Of hikes, wildflowers, and glaciers.  Of humble ascends and descends.  Of sore knees and beat up toes.  Of rock scrambles. Of waterfalls and alpine lakes.  And in the end, yet again, of places in the earth of extreme breathtaking beauty.

Over the years of traveling, I have learned the lesson that taking a day off here and there is rather essential to keeping the burnout at bay.  We tend to mix travel and adventure and as difficult as it is to slow down, there are days when those are the easiest decisio...

Chamonix is the valley that sits at the foot of Mont Blanc and a classic mountain village.  It is my first taste of the European Alps and although I would rank it a 10 (out of 10) in the touristy scale, I am drawn to it nevertheless and have zero things to complain abo...

If there is a vision of Mont Blanc I want to leave you with to inspire you to contemplate even the remote possibility of making it to the French Alps, it would probably be this unobstructed panorama from Brevent, on the mountain facing the Mont Blanc Massif.  It was a...

I hate to admit it but I sometimes find myself pondering on mortality. The thought creeps in my head and unravels itself, like a virus, repeating itself over, "I don't want to die.  Ever."

There is profound attachment to experiences, places, and moments that the thought...

Without intention, this trip to the Mont Blanc area of the French Alps has turned into a glacier chase. It is heartbreaking to imagine that these glaciers that have been existing for hundreds of years could just one day be gone.  Regardless of where you stand on whethe...

It is not hard to imagine why man, for hundreds of years now, has attempted summit after summit of the Alps - French, Swiss, Italian.  It would be odd to think that human beings in all their curiosity did not contemplate, while looking at these massive mountain peaks,...

While Lac Bleu was a walk in the park, this hike from Lac Bleu to Mer de Glace glacier via Le Signal Forbes was a bit painful.  Downhill is not my best suit given my busted knee and admittedly, two hours and change of descending took a bit of a toll.  There were bits o...

From the top of L'Aiguille du Midi, get off the cable car at Plan L'Aiguille for the uber easy 15 minute hike to Lac Bleu.  It will be one of the best fifteen minutes you will spend in your life - guaranteed.

The start of the hike begins with Mont Blanc in the backgroun...

When I grow up, I want to be a mountaineer.

I just wish I had known sooner.

Why else would I eye the mountaineers on the gondola with so much envy, taking in the details of their gear, ropes slung on their shoulders, carabiners and certain unidentifable metal thing...
